Think back to early May. We had some really, really cool and wet days. We even had some snow. Well, another one of “those” is on the way. We won’t see any snow, but it’s going to be cold.
Low pressure will pass right over northern PA on Wednesday. At the same time, high [...]

First off, this weekend will not be a complete washout. Secondly, temperatures are going to cool off compared to today, but they will actually be close to average.
Ok, here’s the details.
An upper level low will move eastward tonight through Sunday, spreading a few thundershowers into the area. The best chance for rain [...]

40′s and low 50′s for highs and rain, not bad if it was March 18. But this is May! (Read More)

It was a wet weekend across the Alleghenies and some of us picked up over 2 inches of rain between Friday and Sunday. The bulk of the rain fell on Saturday, as expected.
Some of the hardest hit areas were in Somerset County as residents in Holsopple were evacuated on Saturday due to the rising waters. The returned home Sunday to start the clean-up. It wasn’t all bad as some actually went kayaking in the ocean-like waters of the Stonycreek River near Greenhouse Park in Somerset County.
So how much rain did we pick up? Have a look below at some of the totals. These come from the NWS Public Information Statement released Sunday at 2 PM.
Bedford County
Buffalo Mills – 2.32″
Wolfsburg – 1.95″
East Saxton – 1.82″
Blair County
Altoona – 2.58″
Williamsburg – 2.48″
Tyrone – 2.11″
Cambria County
Belmont – 1.09″
Cameron County
Stevenson Dam – 1.71″
Centre County
State College – 2.13″
Philipsburg – 2.09″
Clinton County
Lock Haven – 1.57″
Renovo – 1.38″
Somerset County
Meyersdale – 2.30″
Our rivers and streams across the Alleghenies crested early Sunday morning. Have a look at some of the final crests for some of the places we were watching.

There’s a few changes in the thinking from last night, but the overall theme remains the same. The steadiest and heaviest of the rain looks to fall on Saturday. Right now, amounts appear to be on the order of an inch to an inch and a half.
If we see rainfall amounts over 1.5 [...]

Low pressure moved to our west on Sunday, drawing up plenty of mild and moist air. Another area of low pressure formed along the coast last night and enhanced our rainfall across the Alleghenies. Many of the smaller streams and creeks across the Northern Alleghenies came out of their banks, resulting in minor flooding. [...]

So, I was able to do a little geocaching over the past couple of weeks.
Zach (a coworker here at WJAC) and I went out geocaching a couple of Wednesdays ago and went in search of just a couple because there was rain on the way. We went into Indiana County to do some searching and started with Rocky Cove.
I had warned Zach that he’d better wear long pants, but he didn’t listen. He ended up with cuts and a bloody leg.
We did find the cache, though… and got a great view out of it as well!
Power Lines and a Power Plant
After getting the smiley for the find on that one, we went in search of Won’t You Be My Neighbor?. We searched but the GPSr was jumping all around and we couldn’t seem to find that one.

Even though we didn’t like the timing, the rain this weekend was just what we needed. Amounts from Saturday morning through this afternoon ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 inches! The highest totals were in Indiana County.
The rain will be much lighter over the next few days, but the big story will be the [...]

The National Climatic Data Center has released their final survey of the month of July and the results aren’t surprising. They found that Pennsylvania had the coldest July in 115 years (meaning the coldest July on record).

It’s been quite a week as far as rain goes, and we didn’t even have that many thunderstorms! Typically we get most of our rain in July and August from cold fronts and thunderstorms, but not this year. We had our second steady rain-event for the week on Friday, and here’s what we ended [...]

It seems like it’s been wet as of late, but not as bad as you might think. Our rain totals for May were a little above average, but the problem is it rained more days in the month than were dry. Take a look at our totals:

Have you had enough of the rain yet? I sure have. We’ve had our fair share of it over the past week across the Alleghenies. In particular, areas south and east have had a lot of rain.
Let’s compare a couple of locations in the region and see how much rain we’ve had…
Altoona: [...]

Like Tony mentioned yesterday, we got a good drenching across PARTS of the Alleghenies. We actually came pretty close to breaking a record in Johnstown.
The record rainfall for May 4th is 0.85″ in a single day. Yesterday, we had 0.80″. We were only 0.05″ away from a new record.

Today was justabout as good as it gets in mid April! Tomorrow will be even better! Highs on Saturday will soar into the 70s for most of the area, with the higher hilltops staying in the upper 60s, and the deepest valleys southeast of Johnstown reaching 80! Enjoy it…

As most of us already know, March was very dry. We saw our share of brush and wild fires the entire month. Only trace amounts of snow fell, which was unusual. And the rain amounts were way below where they should have been

Our friends over at WTOV in Steubenville had a post on their blog the other day. Check this out. It’s pretty interesting…

During the 6 PM show, I had a weather trivia question that asked…
April showers bring May flowers… But is April our wettest month? The answer to the trivia question is… NO! April is not our wettest month.
So, what month is our wettest month in the Alleghenies? I was kinda surprised with the answer. To see it, click into the post.

It’s good to see the rain from time to time, and today was perfect for our dry conditions that we’ve had overall since about Valentine’s Day. Most of us picked up about 3/4″ of rain, with some spots west of the mountains seeing a little more and the opposite to the east. Now we turn our attention to the weekend and next week!

Get ready for some rain! Not just rain, but some good ole fashioned heavy downpours common in April! We’ll pick up an average of 3/4″, with some spots along and west of 219 going over 1 inch. The upper low will then give us some wraparound rain and snow showers early Saturday morning before [...]
