Temperatures this afternoon soared into the 80s and 90s, plus the humidity is very high for September. Take a look at the late afternoon heat index temps:
Autumn will make itself known next week, however, with several days in the 60s and some rain. Right now, flooding doesn’t look to be a concern….but [...]

 It's been dry lately!
It’s never ceases to amaze me how we can go from one side of the spectrum to the other around here when it comes to weather. It’ll be 90 one day and the next we’re struggling to hit 60 degrees. Or, it’ll be extremely wet for several months… I’m talking major flooding… and then we’re talking about needing rain a couple months later. That is the case right now. We need rain, or at least we will soon.
Take a look at the graphic to the right. This outlines some details about our current situation.
As of July 15th, we only had 0.33″ of rain at the Johnstown – Cambria County Airport. That’s over 2 inches below normal. Our last half-inch rainfall came on May 24th and the last time we had over an inch of rain in a single day was March 23rd.
So where are we so far for the month and year across the state? Take a look at the graphics below. The first one is the month-to-date graphic. Notice that most counties across the state are 75% or more below normal. That’s a sure sign that we’ll need some rain soon. (Read More)

Unfortunately, we’re talking about rainfall here. We got off to a great start in May after a soggy April, but look at where we are now:

Some areas, like Bedford county, are over 75% above average for the entire month already. Get used to it, [...]

Just how far above average are we when it comes to rainfall? Take a look at the map below for the last 90 days:

Here’s a look at how we’re doing so far this month, compared to last year and the 30-year average:
April Stats
As you can see, we’re already close to the average rainfall for the entire month and there’s another 2+ weeks to go. All locations will likely be above average by the end [...]

Temperatures will be very erratic this week, and next week doesn’t look much better. But first, let’s focus on the last two days. Wasn’t it nice? Highs were in the 70s and 80s with plenty of sunshine, and even though we had some rain, it was still a nice afternoon.
OK… onward. Low pressure [...]

Unfortunately there’s not much good news tonight. Rain will continue over the next few hours, heavy at times, continuing to exacerbate the flooding that occurring in parts of the area. The hardest hit region will be the Eastern Alleghenies where 36 rainfall totals will be in excess of 2″ in many spots.
Further west, [...]

Get the umbrella ready. Get the raincoat out. It’s going to be one of those days tomorrow.
Low pressure will move up from the south tonight and tomorrow, spreading an initially light rain into the Alleghenies. As the day wears on and that low strengthens, rain will become steadier and heavier. By the time [...]

While our drought watches continue, we’ve certainly put a dent in our dry conditions. Take a look at what we’ve picked up over the last week:
And there’s more on the way through Wednesday. Many of us will see another two to four tenths by late Wednesday night. If you’re tired [...]

Even with our recent rainfall, we’re still running behind schedule. Take a look:

Think back to early May. We had some really, really cool and wet days. We even had some snow. Well, another one of “those” is on the way. We won’t see any snow, but it’s going to be cold.
Low pressure will pass right over northern PA on Wednesday. At the same time, high [...]

First off, this weekend will not be a complete washout. Secondly, temperatures are going to cool off compared to today, but they will actually be close to average.
Ok, here’s the details.
An upper level low will move eastward tonight through Sunday, spreading a few thundershowers into the area. The best chance for rain [...]

40′s and low 50′s for highs and rain, not bad if it was March 18. But this is May! (Read More)

It was a wet weekend across the Alleghenies and some of us picked up over 2 inches of rain between Friday and Sunday. The bulk of the rain fell on Saturday, as expected.
Some of the hardest hit areas were in Somerset County as residents in Holsopple were evacuated on Saturday due to the rising waters. The returned home Sunday to start the clean-up. It wasn’t all bad as some actually went kayaking in the ocean-like waters of the Stonycreek River near Greenhouse Park in Somerset County.
So how much rain did we pick up? Have a look below at some of the totals. These come from the NWS Public Information Statement released Sunday at 2 PM.

There’s a few changes in the thinking from last night, but the overall theme remains the same. The steadiest and heaviest of the rain looks to fall on Saturday. Right now, amounts appear to be on the order of an inch to an inch and a half.
If we see rainfall amounts over 1.5 [...]

Low pressure moved to our west on Sunday, drawing up plenty of mild and moist air. Another area of low pressure formed along the coast last night and enhanced our rainfall across the Alleghenies. Many of the smaller streams and creeks across the Northern Alleghenies came out of their banks, resulting in minor flooding. [...]

So, I was able to do a little geocaching over the past couple of weeks.
Zach (a coworker here at WJAC) and I went out geocaching a couple of Wednesdays ago and went in search of just a couple because there was rain on the way. We went into Indiana County to do some searching and started with Rocky Cove.
I had warned Zach that he’d better wear long pants, but he didn’t listen. He ended up with cuts and a bloody leg.
We did find the cache, though… and got a great view out of it as well!
Power Lines and a Power Plant
After getting the smiley for the find on that one, we went in search of Won’t You Be My Neighbor?. We searched but the GPSr was jumping all around and we couldn’t seem to find that one.

Even though we didn’t like the timing, the rain this weekend was just what we needed. Amounts from Saturday morning through this afternoon ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 inches! The highest totals were in Indiana County.
The rain will be much lighter over the next few days, but the big story will be the [...]
