2009-2010 Snow Prediction Contest Results

Way back in October and November, we posted the Snow Prediction Contest post on the blog.  Your job was to predict how much snow we would see at each of the four ‘big cities’ in the Alleghenies… Johnstown, Altoona, State College, and DuBois.

We closed the contest at the end of November and have been sitting on the results since then waiting for the season to come to an end.  Now that it’s over, here’s a look at the winners of the contest and the snow totals from the 2009-2010 snow season.

As a guide, I provided the snow totals from the 2008-2009 season…

Johnstown:  67.8″
Altoona:  28.7″
State College:  20.7″
DuBois:  56.6″

Total:  173.8″

This season was nothing like last year.  Have a look at the totals from the four ‘big cities’ for 2009-2010…

Johnstown:  124.3″
Altoona:  62.0″
State College:  48.7″
DuBois:  48.4″

Total:  283.4″

Snow Prediction Final Scores (Hopefully!)

With temperatures in the 80s, I hope it’s safe to put this competition to bed.  We’ve waited all year to figure out who the big winners were going to be in the snow prediction competition.  The results are in:

Here are the numbers that we used for the final totals in the Alleghenies…

We’re about 75% of the way through Winter 2008-09 and it’s time to check in and see how we’re doing so far on our Wintercast.

Here’s a recap of what we predicted back in November…

Temperatures:

Snow Predictions (Nov. 22)

So, we’ve been getting snow reports left and right and now it’s time to sum up what you think so far.  By the way, if you’d like to make your snow predictions, you can do so on the main weather page at wjactv.com.  You only have until the end of the month!

Let’s recap what we said about the winter first.

 - November and December will be close to normal

 - January through March will be above average

 - The season will be above average

Last year’s averages were as follows:

Johnstown: 70″
Altoona: 37″
State College: 32″
DuBois: 59″

Combined Total: 198″

A little ways into the competition, here’s where we stand right now:

Johnstown: 13.6″
Altoona: 0.4″
State College: 1.7″
DuBois: 5.5″

Combined Total: 21.2″
