Brushing Up On The Weather

This gadget makes your toothpaste taste different based on the weather conditions.

You brush your teeth everyday (at least I hope you do) and you probably have a toothpaste that tastes like mint or cinnamon or has a stripe that’s supposed to make your teeth whiter (but does that really work?, I digress).  Now, the brilliant minds at MIT have created a toothpaste that changes based on the weather.

I like tech websites. That’s probably not a big surprise to many of you as I sometimes talk about tech and social media. While browsing around the interwebs today, I ran across a cool story about a climber who [...]

NWS Takes Up Tweeting

NWS Set To Use Twitter

A lot of you are on Twitter now.  If you’re not, now’s the time to get involved.  The popular social networking website/platform is still growing and there’s a lot of valuable information on it.

Now, the National Weather Service is jumping on the Twitter bandwagon by accepting severe weather tweets.  Really, you can tweet about any kind of weather, but they’re looking for severe weather updates.

It’s pretty simple, too.  All you have to do is include the #wxreport hashtag in your tweet and the NWS will see it.  There are a couple of kinks, however.  First, you have to have geo-location enabled.  If you don’t they’re asking that you include your location in a set of W’s.  Confused yet?  Don’t be.  I’ll spell it out for you below…

If you have enable geo-location, type the following into your twitter box:

#wxreport SEVERE WEATHER TO REPLACE THE UNDERLINED TEXT

If you don’t have geo-location enabled through your Twitter page or from whatever you tweet on, do this:

#wxreport WW zip code WW SEVERE WEATHER TO REPLACE THE UNDERLINED TEXT

Most phones these days come equipped with cameras.  That’s cool, but it’s novelty is over.  Now, we can use our cameras to scan bar codes!

Severe Weather Center 2.0

So, what is this new system?  What does it do?  How will it affect me?  What can I look forward to?  Well, let me answer those questions by giving you the rundown of our new systems.

The new system is a product of Weather Central.  They’re the same company who supplied our old weather system, too.  It’s a great company based out of Madison, Wisconsin.  They are the sole provider of all of our weather equipment.

In all, we have 7 different weather computers in the Severe Weather Center.  Here’s a breakdown of what they do…
