“This was a triumph. Â I’m making a note here… huge success. Â It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction.”
The line above is from the video game ‘Portal’ and I used it in the e-mail I sent to my coworkers. I really feel it applies here, as well. Â I owe so much of my success from my six years at WJAC to you, the viewers. Â I came to WJAC in 2005 and had a really hard time in the beginning because I didn’t have a lot of interaction. Â I quickly found a way to combat that… social media.
It started with the Severe Weather Team Blog and quickly grew to Twitter and Facebook and even live web streams via Ustream.tv. Â This is when I really started to feel a special connection with all of you. Â Not only did you welcome me into your living room every night, but you talked with me as if I was a member of the family. Â Some people questioned my reliance on social media to connect with you, but I truly believe that it is what made this the ‘huge success’ as I quoted above. Â Not only did you get your watches, warnings, and forecasts, but you got to see a personal side of me and I got to see a personal side of you… so much so that some of you shared your most upsetting, personal moments. Â It’s these connections that build your trust in me as a meteorologist. (Read More)

We started the Severe Weather Team Blog a couple of years ago, but in the last year, we made the transition to WordPress.com. One of the really nice things about WordPress is that it lets you see how many people have been on your website.
Today, we hit a new milestone with our 20,000th [...]

There’s been some talk recently about hurricanes, especially because of the F, G, H, and I hurricanes this year. Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike caused significant problems for the United States and the damage is still being tallied today. There’s been some talk that those four hurricane names could all be retired.
That got me thinking about retired hurricane names and prompted me to make up a short quiz about them…
Try to answer these 5 questions. You will find the answer by clicking on the link below.
Question 1:Â Which of the following letters has never had a hurricane retired?
a) P
b) R
c) S
Question 2: It makes sense that the letters in the beginning of the alphabet have more retired hurricane names. Which letter has the most retirees?
a) A
b) B
c) C
d) D
Question 3: When a hurricane causes major damages, that name is retired. In 1966, there was a hurricane name retired for no apparant reason. What was the name?

b) Frieda
c) Fiona
Question 4:Â Which of the following years did not have any hurricane names retired?

I had a few days to burn before the end of the year, so I figured I’d take last Friday and Saturday off. On Thursday, a friend and I made plans to go quad riding Friday afternoon. Now, I should also note that I don’t really pay much attention to the weather when I’m off. I didn’t expect the monsoon that came on Thursday night and through Friday, but we decided to go riding anyways.
I should also note that I am an amateur in every sense of the word when it comes to riding quads. As a matter of fact, I just learned how to ride them for my appearance at Rock Run ATV Park back in June. Click in to continue reading about my misadventures in quad riding…

Remember last week when I posted all the graphics about our current rainfall deficit? Well, it looks like we’ll probably be getting some rain over the next few weeks with all of the development in the tropics. While it’s way too early to say which storms will form and which ones will affect our [...]

It’s been a dry couple of months across the Alleghenies. I was wondering just how dry we were compared to normal, so I visited the Mid-Atlantic Region Forecast Center’s website to find the answer.
I found a bunch of graphics on the site depicting our departure from normal over the past 7 days, 30 [...]

It’s amazing just how small of a world it is. I got down to the Outer Banks on Sunday. We get to our house and it turns out that the owners either live in or are from Cambria County. The house has a big sign that said ‘The Rummels – Yorktown, VA – Cambria [...]

On Friday, Lauren Melvin and I took a trip to northern Cambria County into Patton to ride ATVs at Rock Run ATV Park. What a great time! We met a lot of great people there and got to see some cool things they’ve done with the park. If you have an ATV or a [...]

NBC already has Weather Plus, a 24/7 weather channel with your local forecast every few minutes. There’s also an L-bar on the screen all the time with your local weather information.
The Weather Channel offers ‘Local on the 8′s.’Â They also have different weather programming that airs 24/7.
What would happen if the two were to merge? Well, it’s not necessarily what’s going to happen, but it’s a possibility. According to our cousin in the print business, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, NBC Universal is the sole bidder (along with two private equity firms) to buy The Weather Channel. Continue reading to find out how much NBC is ready to pay for the station and all the goodies that go along with it…

Another thanks goes out to our sister station, WTOV-9, for this one. It’s my first day back from vacation and I’m just not into the swing of things yet (you know how it is), so I figured I’d check out their blog. I found this. I never knew anything about it and it seems [...]
