A nice, large area of high pressure will build into the Alleghenies over the next 24 to 36 hours, supplying plenty of dry and comfortable air. In fact, low temperatures in the 40s will be common north of I-80 on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

After a few gusty thunderstorms tonight, a nice change is on the way for a few days. Highs today were in the mid to upper 80s, with a few low 90s in Bedford County. Many areas will stay in the 70s on Friday!
High pressure will build into the Alleghenies on Thursday, clearing us [...]

Enjoy the next few days, as we have a “weather roller coaster warning” in effect. Is that real? No. But it should be!
Southwest winds, plenty of sunshine and dry air will combine to push temperatures up to 80° in some areas tomorrow, before we start to cool down. It will  be a slow process at first, as we drop back into the low to mid 70s on Thursday and Friday. A few showers will start our day Thursday, but they’ll be gone by mid-morning or so. Friday will also have a chance of rain and thunder, but those showers should hold off until later in the day or at night.

At this point, it’s just that. A potential.
Global computer modelling ranges from a deep snowstorm up into the middle of Pennsylvania, to a light accumulation south of Route 22. What is different from this past weekend’s storm is that we don’t have a pressing, arctic airmass in place. That helped to force the [...]

Our next significant weather maker looks to come in the form of some rain, and also a bit of snow.
Everything looks to get going Sunday morning or afternoon, and temperatures aloft will be getting colder as the day wears on. This is going to be a very tough forecast, as some of the [...]

There’s been some talk about a weekend storm for the past few days now. Well, not much has really changed in model world as far as a solution. We go from a storm moving well off to our south and out to sea, to a storm riding so far north and west that it brings in enough warm air to see something other than snow.

Well, kind of. It’s going to feel pretty warm compared to how it’s been as of late.
The deep trough that’s been encompassing most of the country will start to lift out this upcoming week, and that means most of the cold air will leave as well. Notice that I said “most”. Enough of [...]

The weather pattern over the next two weeks is fully loaded. Now we just have to be on the lookout for something to trigger a storm.
Everything is falling into place. The global indices are favorable for a storm in the eastern part of the country basically from now through the end of the [...]

It looks likely right now that we’ll get some. The big question is….will there be a storm? A big storm?
It’s possible, but it all depends on what happens in Canada. We’ll have one or two waves move up toward the Alleghenies late this week and into the weekend. If the vortex over Canada [...]

Well, our Wintercast says so! Seriously though, after a mild start to next week it looks like arctic air will be coming back. But how long will it last? Check out some of the maps that I use to determine the longer-range forecast:

We still have a bit of uncertainty tonight as far as the track of our next storm is concerned, with some models out to sea and others up the coast.

We’ve gone through quite a change over the past several days. Early last week, we had highs in the 60s. By the weekend, we had snow on the ground in many locations. And even colder weather is looming later this week.

After what’s been a very mild and quiet month for us, many locations will see their first accumulating snowfall later this week.

It had to come to an end at some point, and that point looks to be later next week. A series of cold fronts will cross the area starting midweek, and each one will have even colder air behind it. We could even have some snow flying for Thanksgiving, and more the following week.

November has been mild. Very mild in fact. Temperatures have been running 4 to 6 degrees above average, but things are going to change next week.

Temperatures so far this month have been well above average, making our record snowfall in October (for parts of the Alleghenies) seem like a distant memory. The average temperatures are running about 1 to 2 degrees above normal, and our daytime highs are about double that. So when will things change?

Call it what you want, but it looks like we’re going to have some pretty warm temps over the next 10 days or so!

Well, here’s the definition:
Indian summer is an informal expression given to a period of sunny, warm weather in autumn in the northern hemisphere, typically in late October or early November, after the leaves have turned due to an onset of frost but before the first snowfall.
Some of us saw snow last week, others did not. So if we really bend the “rule” here, this could qualify! Either way, it sure is nice. And there’s more to come.

As some of the new model runs arrive tonight, indications are that we’ll be dealing with some wet snow across the southern half of the state all the way into Sunday morning. The area most likely to pick up a few inches of the slush will be across Cambria and Somerset counties east to I-99. And just like the first round, this will also be elevation-dependent.
