On WJAC-TV News at 6 PM, I showed a graphic stating that you lose a boatload of heat through your head. After showing the cold weather tips graphic on the air tonight, I got an e-mail from JoAnn tonight saying:
After a little research, I found out that my statement might not be the full truth. Even though we didn’t like the timing, the rain this weekend was just what we needed. Amounts from Saturday morning through this afternoon ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 inches! The highest totals were in Indiana County. Well, the cold coming into the area late tonight through Saturday morning can be dangerous. Most of the area will [...] You know it’s cold when your car has trouble starting when you go to leave for work. True story! Luckily I live very close to the station, so it wasn’t a huge deal. I had someone come down and give it a jump and I was able to drive it to work. Let’s hope it starts when I go to leave for lunch later. Anyway, it’s been an extremely cold day across the Alleghenies with temperatures running mainly in the teens and lower 20s and wind chills, at times, below zero. We didn’t break any records this morning, but we did yesterday. Take a look… First, let’s talk about the winds that we saw on Saturday night into Sunday… We had damage across the Alleghenies from the winds, so I called the NWS on Monday to get some details on the high wind gusts on Sunday and they told me the following: Johnstown – 64 mph Altoona - 55 [...] I got to thinking after the last blog post that some of you may not know what the Wind Chill Advisory entails… especially because I wasn’t sure of the exact thresholds needed for it to be issued. The Wind Chill Advisory, according to the National Weather Service in State College, is issued when the [...] It’s kinda funny. I’m sitting here in the weather center on Sunday night. The computer next to me always has the current temperature for the JST airport in Richland Township on it. It says 5° right now. It also says the low was 1° and that it currently feels like it is -13° with [...] It’s cold already and the temperature is at 18 degrees! I am NOT looking forward to the high of 12 degrees tomorrow afternoon or the low of 3 degrees on Sunday night. I recommend staying indoors the next couple of days.
