From One Extreme To The Other

It's been dry lately!

It’s never ceases to amaze me how we can go from one side of the spectrum to the other around here when it comes to weather. It’ll be 90 one day and the next we’re struggling to hit 60 degrees. Or, it’ll be extremely wet for several months… I’m talking major flooding… and then we’re talking about needing rain a couple months later. That is the case right now. We need rain, or at least we will soon.

Take a look at the graphic to the right. This outlines some details about our current situation.

As of July 15th, we only had 0.33″ of rain at the Johnstown – Cambria County Airport.  That’s over 2 inches below normal.  Our last half-inch rainfall came on May 24th and the last time we had over an inch of rain in a single day was March 23rd.

So where are we so far for the month and year across the state?  Take a look at the graphics below.  The first one is the month-to-date graphic.  Notice that most counties across the state are 75% or more below normal.  That’s a sure sign that we’ll need some rain soon. (Read More)

Getting Dry

While we’re not under a drought watch yet, we are certainly heading in that direction. Take a look at tonight’s streamflows from across the state. All the green dots indicate where water levels are near normal, while the red and orange show were the water is low:

Plenty of Rain

While our drought watches continue, we’ve certainly put a dent in our dry conditions. Take a look at what we’ve picked up over the last week:

And there’s more on the way through Wednesday. Many of us will see another two to four tenths by late Wednesday night. If you’re tired [...]

Still Dry!

Even with our recent rainfall, we’re still running behind schedule. Take a look:

The Desert Northeast (Part 2)

Dry Weather in the Alleghenies

How about this weather? It’s been extremely dry and up until Monday, comfortable with low humidity. Monday started to crank up the heat a little with highs getting into the 90s and staying that way through Thursday (and even Friday for some). The humidity crept up, as well and it started to feel more uncomfortable outside. Now, our string of dry weather is finally going to end today with thunderstorms and heavy downpours.

Thursday was the 10th day in a row without rain. As you can see in the graphic, the last rain we had was on June 28th. The last heavy rain came on June 9th. Those numbers are from the Johnstown-Cambria County Airport.

So, where does this dry spell rank in terms of number of days without precipitation? Let’s take a look. Click into the post to check it out. (Read More)

The Desert Northeast

Dry Weather - As of Monday, July 5, 2010

The desert northeast isn’t a term you hear often… or at all. I feel like it’s kinda been accurate over the last couple of days with temperatures getting into the 80s and dry weather.

Take a look at the graphic. We’ve been really dry recently. As of Monday, we’re up to 7 consecutive days without a drop of rain. It has been pretty dry recently. I got a dose of that with all of the dust that we stirred up during my UTV ride on my trip to 7 Springs last week. It was extremely dusty.

As far as rain goes, we haven’t had any for a week but it’s been even longer since we’ve had a really good soaking. The last half-inch (and 1-inch) rainfall was back on June 9th. So, it’s almost been a month.

We are expecting some rain as we head into the weekend. Will it be enough to catch us up for the month? I’m not sure. As of Monday, we are about 0.5″ below normal for the month of July. (Read More)

It’s Been Dry!

The risk for brush / forest fires is high again in the Alleghenies because it’s been so dry lately. I’ve looked up some stats on our dry spell. Take a look at the graphic below for the details…

Start of 2009: 2nd Driest in History!

In the beginning and middle of March, meteorologists across the state of Pennsylvania were pleading for rain as it was so dry. Now that the first quarter of the year is over, we’re finding out that it was drier than we initially thought.

According to NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, January through [...]
