Yesterday, we had a record low in Johnstown. The temperature hit 13° when the record was 14° set in 1923. Today, there’s another record low in the Alleghenies. Altoona hit 21° this morning and the old record was 22° set back in 1982.
After seeing these records, Jim and I got to thinking… what are the all-time record lows for the area?

Lambeau Field in Green Bay - Coldest NFL Game Ever!
My trivia question tonight had to do with the coldest NFL game ever played in Pittsburgh. The exact question was “How cold was the coldest NFL game ever played in Pittsburgh?” and the answer was, surprisingly, only 11 degrees. I thought it might have been colder.
In doing my research for the question, I looked online and found an article on Forbes.com outlining the coldest games in NFL history. The research may not be 100% perfect, but it shows a good representation of some of the coldest games. Take a look inside this post to see the top 5. (Read More)
There’s been some talk this week about a snowstorm for the weekend. Well, that’s all but been canceled.
On WJAC-TV News at 6 PM, I showed a graphic stating that you lose a boatload of heat through your head. After showing the cold weather tips graphic on the air tonight, I got an e-mail from JoAnn tonight saying:
The TV show ‘The Doctors says that you don’t lose heat through your head.
After a little research, I found out that my statement might not be the full truth.
Yesterday, I finished my post by saying this…
It looks like a few of us could be close again tomorrow morning.Johnstown: 47° (1930)

State College: 45° (1930)
DuBois: 49° (1967)
Indiana: 44° (1960)
…and we did it!

If I told you we were below average, temperature-wise, for the summer so far, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. Today’s lows were just the icing cool whip on the cake. We broke 3 records across the Alleghenies this morning and came close to another one.

Just like it should be this time of year, right? Well, the cold coming into the area late tonight through Saturday morning can be dangerous. On the snow side, parts of the Laurel Highlands and Northern Alleghenies will see up to 6 inches of fresh powder by Thursday night. Most of the area will [...]
Good Morning. Right now, I’m staying up at State College with a friend because I’m going to the NWS for a conference in about a half hour. He goes to Penn State and lives off of Atherton. It’s a weird parking situation up here. I was able to park in front of his place until 10 PM last night. Then, I had to move my car to a municipal lot (about 3 blocks away) and move my car back by 8 AM this morning. When I got up to move my car this morning, it was COLD… and there was a little frost on my windows, too!

I got to thinking after the last blog post that some of you may not know what the Wind Chill Advisory entails… especially because I wasn’t sure of the exact thresholds needed for it to be issued.
The Wind Chill Advisory, according to the National Weather Service in State College, is issued when the [...]
It’s kinda funny. I’m sitting here in the weather center on Sunday night. The computer next to me always has the current temperature for the JST airport in Richland Township on it. It says 5° right now. It also says the low was 1° and that it currently feels like it is -13° with [...]
It’s cold already and the temperature is at 18 degrees! I am NOT looking forward to the high of 12 degrees tomorrow afternoon or the low of 3 degrees on Sunday night.
I recommend staying indoors the next couple of days. If you have to go outside, be sure to bundle up because wind [...]
