Is It Time To Freeze?

Nick and I were talking last night about the first frost and first freeze in the Alleghenies.  He lives in DuBois and they get it a little earlier than we do here in Johnstown.  Either way, it’s getting close.

I decided to do some research and figure out when we typically get our first freeze, which essentially brings and end to the growing season.  Here’s what I came up with…

The first freeze for the Alleghenies is split up into 5 different dates based on location, although some areas could get it sooner or later depending on the year and the elevation.

Map: Average First Freeze

According to the NWS, first freeze is as follows:

September 20: Elk, Cameron

September 30: Clinton, N. Centre, Clearfield, Cambria, and Somerset

October 10: S. Centre, Blair, Huntingdon, Bedford, Fulton, Franklin

October 15 and October 20: Counties to the east of Centre, Huntingdon, and Franklin

Take a look at the map to the right to see it all.  The counties to the west were not listed, but my best guess would be as follows… Indiana, Fayette, and Westmoreland on October 10 with Jefferson on September 30 and Forest and Clarion on September 20.  Those are just guesstimates, however. Brrrrr! But Changes Are Coming!

Check out the lows from Wednesday (we’ll go through the same thing Thursday morning):

Thursday afternoon will be much different than Wednesday however. Plenty of sunshine and upper level temperatures warming up will give us a very nice day. Highs will range through the 60s, but it will stay rather breezy. That’s the only [...]

Frosty Night

As the sky clears tonight, temperatures will tumble down into the 30s. Here’s the result:

If you have a few plants that you’d like to keep around for a little longer, it would be a good idea to cover them up or bring them in tonight. After a cold start tomorrow, [...]

Brrrr!

Welcome to June! After a very cold start this morning, the afternoon didn’t turn out half bad. We had a good deal of sunshine, especially south of route 322, and warmed up nicely. But take a look at what we turned in this morning:

That 33° reading in DuBois was just 1 [...]

Frosty and Possibly Record-Setting Monday

We’ve been advertising a cool-down for a while now and it’s here.  Today’s high only made it into the 50s across the Alleghenies.  That’s not going to be the big story, though.

Our big story right now is the Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories in place across the Alleghenies tonight and into tomorrow morning.  Have a look at the map below for all the counties that are in the mix by clicking into the post.  It’s pretty much most of our viewing area.

Protect Those Plants!

Clearing skies and an unseasonably cold airmass will combine with light winds to cause areas of frost to form late tonight and early Tuesday morning. Here the map:

Cold Morning… Another Tomorrow!

Wow… It was cold this morning.  Temperatures across the region were mainly in the lower 30s, but some locations did get into the 20s this morning, as predicted.  We’re in for another cold morning tomorrow with more locations getting into the 20s.

Here’s a look at this morning’s lows…

Saturday Morning's Lows

Saturday Morning

Just an FYI… Clearfield hit 31° this morning and Bradford hit 24°.

Freeze Warnings in Place!

It wasn’t as cold this morning with lows in the mid 40s across the Alleghenies. That’ll change tomorrow morning as we’ll see some of the coldest air yet. Expect those overnight lows to be mainly in the 30s. Some of those deeper valleys could dip into the 20s. With that, the National Weather Service [...]

Some Frost on the Pumpkins

It was a cold morning all across the Alleghenies.  Temperatures were mainly in the upper 30s and lower 40s, but some places took a run at the freezing mark.  Just north of our viewing area, they were into the upper 20s.  Bradford hit 27° this morning.  I’m glad I wasn’t up north!

Let’s take an in-depth look at this mornings lows, the growing season in the region, and a little about frost in this post.  Continue reading for all the scoop…

Hoar Frost?

Many of you have probably never heard of this term so I have a picture from a viewer (Brett, Centre Co.) for you, along with a definition.

Hoarfrost: Deposits of interlocking ice crystals formed by direct sublimation on objects, usually those of small diameter freely exposed to the air, such as tree branches, [...]

Weather Overview – Friday, September 14th

Here it comes folks! Our first frosts of the season. Cold, dry air thanks to a large area of high pressure coming in from the north along with light winds will allow for temperatures to drop off into the 30s for most of us on Sunday and Monday morning. Be sure to cover up [...]
