Futurecast - Tuesday Morning
Numbers have been crunched and models have been perused and now it’s time to come up with a forecast for this messy storm coming from the south just in time for the middle of the week.
We’ve been talking about this one for a few days now and the forecast is beginning to become clearer… at least not as murky!
Let’s put this into a timeline form because it’ll make it easier to understand and follow.¬† I’ll also be noting the north and south a lot because this storm looks like a different beast for both locations.¬† For simplicity’s sake, let’s say the boundary line is I-80.¬† That line is very flexible, however and can shift either north or south with later model runs. Rain will continue to advance into the Alleghenies from the southwest overnight, mixing at times with sleet. For many of us the rain will freeze on contact all night, leading to icy roads in the morning. The only areas that will stay warm enough for plain rain will be the valleys of western Somerset [...]
The icicle went completely through the foam!
On Monday, I did a story about icicle dangers.¬ I wondered how I was going to tackle this and decided to do a couple of experiments.¬ I went and found an icicle and then got this piece of foam.¬ I dropped this (relatively small) icicle from [...]
Winter weather advisories are up for most of west-central PA for a mixture of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain through Thanksgiving. The most prone areas will be above 1,500′ in the Laurel Highlands northward along and east of Route 219.
Our mild November will help us out quite a bit tonight and early [...]

Here’s a look at a webpage from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.¬ This contains some good guidelines to remember for ice fishing and other on-ice activities.
Yet another winter storm will impact the area through Wednesday evening, with snow and also ice. Snow will fall tonight area-wide before warmer air aloft changes the snow to ice along and south of I-80. This changeover will occur from southwest to northeast starting around midnight. Elk, Clarion, Forest and Cameron counties will see [...]
What is the strangest thing you’ve ever found in your freezer?
Check back in on Monday and I’ll fill you in on one of the strangest things that you can find in your freezer.¬ Plus, I’ll let you know how to go about making them.¬ I was pretty amazed when I read about it!
Freezing rain and sleet will continue overnight before changing to rain from southwest to northeast tomorrow morning. Indiana, Ligonier, and Clarion will changeover the fastest (likely early tonight), with State College and Driftwood being the slowest (around noon).  (Read More)
This next storm however will be much different than the past few we’ve been dealing with. We have a few things going for a significant ice storm. One of which will be an area of high pressure to our north. Two is very cold temperatures tonight and tomorrow morning. Three is a secondary area [...]
Steady precipitation is on our doorstep, getting ready to move into far western PA from Ohio. Much of Ohio is covered in ice tonight, with the west-central part of the state seeing numerous power outages from the freezing rain. Our temperatures continue to rise VERY slowly, with most areas within a degree or two [...]
Another winter storm will impact the Alleghenies over the next 24 hours with ice and heavy rain. It looks like most areas will receive less than a 1/4″ of ice from this storm, with the exception of Northern Centre, Cameron and Clinton counties. The ice could be damaging in these areas and accumulate up [...]
Let’s set the record straight, first of all… I would prefer all snow!¬† Honestly, I think most of us would.¬† That’s not going to be the case with this storm coming into the region.¬† This one looks to bring a little bit of ice.
In the beginning, we were watching and tracking the storm to see which path it was going to take.¬† There were a couple of different options.¬† Check them out below…
Which Path Will This Storm Take?
In Track #1, the storm would have more of an inland feel to it.¬† With the storm going farther to the west, we’d end up on the warmer side of the storm.¬† That means we’d be dealing with mixed precipitation until the storm passed through the area.¬† On the backside, we’d look forward to some snow.
Track #1 - More Inland, Warmer
In Track #2, the storm would have more of a coastal feel to it.  That means that the warmer air would all be to our south and east, leaving us on the colder side of the storm.  That would have meant all snow.
Track #2 - More Coastal, Colder
Obviously, there are an almost infinite number of variables between these two main tracks, but you get the gist.
So, the question is… which track is this storm taking?¬† Well, it looks like the winning track is… (Read More)
So, we’re into the storm now and I can tell you from experience that it was crazy outside early this morning. I was live in the parking lot of Staples up by the Galleria in Richland Township and I thought I was going to be blown away. The wind was howling and the sleet [...]
Well, the ice storm is well underway. I am taking the day off to avoid the trip into State College, even though a lot of that is on the new highway. I live right on 220 in town here in Port Matilda, and it seems PennDot is on the ball here as trucks are [...]
