This was part of their afternoon forecast discussion today, under the aviation section, apparently birds in Johnstown are up to no good:
WE CONTINUE TO SEE ERRONEOUS STRONG WIND GUSTS AT JST…WHICH WE BELIEVE TO BE DUE TO BIRDS AROUND THE WIND SENSOR. ELECTRONIC TECHNICIANS ARE CONTINUING TO TROUBLESHOOT THE ISSUE.
Would this be [...]

I have decided to write on gardening and weather, now that things are actually growing here in central PA.
Although, I must say, things are a bit behind this year by my observations. This is my sixth spring in this area (came from Pittsburgh), and I have noted that the daffodils, forsythia, etc. [...]

Last year, the night before Easter Centre County saw anywhere from 3-6 inches of snow from a lake effect band on steroids. This year, the snow is back, a more general snow has put 4 3/4 inches on the ground here in Centre County this morning.
Looks like once again, Easter looks more [...]

Many of you by now have seen the images of the terrible tornado that roared through downtown Atlanta. NCAA fans were shaken in the Georgia Dome during a game, the CNN newsroom took a direct hit, and skyscraper glass littered the downtown streets this morning.
This made me think of a classic tornado myth [...]

- I love Punxy Phil, he really is the greatest forecasting varmint of all time. And save it, you fans of the pretender groundhogs like the one down in Georgia, that General Lee or whatever – Phil was the original and haters beware. But here’s the thing – six weeks after February 2 is [...]

On a day like today, partly sunny, mild and no precipitation, one might not think of this as a potentially dangerous situation for driving. But with our recent snowy weather and sudden turn to cold, it can become one when you least expect it.
What makes me think of this was when I was [...]

Snow is slowly intensifying as of 12:45 here in Port Matilda. Three inches and counting on the ground.
I am working out of home today due to the fact that the new stretch of I-99 from the Port Matilda exit to Skytop was a total mess this morning, so my wife and I decided [...]

My father used to say that a lot of the time, you pay for nice weather in the winter. Well, it looks like the bill came due and the payments started this weekend for the mild 2007-2008 winter. Looks like another payment is coming tomorrow. Another winter storm is going to move into [...]

One look at the current weather map would make one think it’s April 5 and not February 5.
Temperatures in western PA are all well into the 50s, as far east as Johnstown and Dubois as a I write this. We are stuck at 39 here in Happy Valley as the warmest of air [...]

Well, the ice storm is well underway. I am taking the day off to avoid the trip into State College, even though a lot of that is on the new highway. I live right on 220 in town here in Port Matilda, and it seems PennDot is on the ball here as trucks are [...]

I am in downtown State College, and thought I would drop a quick post to see if any one experienced damage from the winds so far today.
At my wife and I’s home in Port Matilda, we have avoided damage outside of a lot of branches in the yard. Hey, if Old Man Winter [...]

Okay, in my initial post, I mentioned that it didn’t appear like we had any interesting winter storms on the horizon. Apparently I spoke too soon.
It appears like we have a potentially disruptive winter storm on the way for Thursday night – Friday. Earlier, it seemed this would be more of a rainy [...]

I was hoping, as a snow lover, that my first post would be about an upcoming snowstorm this week. Alas, that is not going to be the case, so I thought I would write about why I am interested in meteorology and weather.
The title of this blog post is a frequent response I [...]
