More Ups and Downs!

Even though we’re just about done with April, bouts of chilly air will continue to make inroads to Pennsylvania from time to time over the next week or so. We will warm up from time to time, but don’t look for any sustained warmth for a little while. Here’s [...]

School Visit #2 – Blacklick Valley Elemantary

I spent the morning at Blacklick Valley Elementary School in Nanty Glo. Sixty kindergarten students had many questions about the environment from how raindrops form to the colors of the rainbow. We even sang a weather song and had sunshine cookies. I’ve been to the Blacklick Valley School District several times over the years [...]

Interesting snippet from National Weather Service forecast discussion

This was part of their afternoon forecast discussion today, under the aviation section, apparently birds in Johnstown are up to no good:

WE CONTINUE TO SEE ERRONEOUS STRONG WIND GUSTS AT JST…WHICH WE BELIEVE TO BE DUE TO BIRDS AROUND THE WIND SENSOR. ELECTRONIC TECHNICIANS ARE CONTINUING TO TROUBLESHOOT THE ISSUE.

Would this be [...]

School Visit #1 – Ebner Elementary

Today kicked off our 20 Visits in 20 Days with a trip to Ebner Elementary School.  Here’s a little bit about the school from school officials…

Mowrie A. Ebner Elementary is part of the Altoona Area School District. Not only is the school a beautiful facility, but it represents a significant honor for all local educators that it has been named and dedicated for one who contributed so much to the educational process in the district. Mowrie A. Ebner was dedicated in October in 1989, and it was named for a former teacher, and director of elementary education.

Mowrie A. Ebner Elementary has a tradition of academic excellence. The students have achieved Annual Yearly Progress six years in a row.

Funny Weatherman Names

I was surfing around the message boards this morning and someone brought this article to the forefront. I want to preface this by saying that the article was printed in 2006. If it were now, I’d like to hope my name would appear on the list.

Here’s a link to the list:Â Click here!

Saturday's Storms (April 26, 2008)

I came into work around 3:00 PM today and looked at Early Warning Doppler 6. It shows a decent line of storms moving into the viewing area. I tracked them through the afternoon. As of 8:50 PM, when I’m writing this, there are still a few storms in the eastern portion of the viewing [...]

Warm, For Now

Our above average warmth will continue for the most part into the weekend and early next week, before we take a big step back by Tuesday and Wednesday. A strong cold front will pass through the area on Monday, bringing with it some rain and much colder temperatures. We’ll go [...]

How Accurate… a Study

A disclaimer before you click onto this link and read it… Upon reading this opinion column, I found it pretty biased AGAINST your friendly, local weatherman. Just take this with a grain of salt because even though numbers don’t lie, numbers can by interpreted to make them say what you want.

5.2 Earthquake Hits Illinois

It’s not exactly where you’d expect to hear of an earthquake, but there was one early Friday in Southeastern Illinois. The epicenter is being placed less than 5 miles from Bellmont, Illinois. According to the USGS Earthquake website, the quake was felt as far west as Kansas, as far north as the UP of [...]

Beautiful Day for a Job Fair

While it’s in the 70s and sunny outside, I was indoors this morning at Windber Middle School for their job fair.  There were a lot of different people there including an x-ray technician, a health inspector, a pharmacist and many more.  I think there were 14 speakers in all.

The students were split into groups and each group spent 15 minutes with each speaker.  I’ll take the time to answer some of their questions for the world right now, just in case they missed the answer.  Here’s some of the questions asked:

Weather Overview – Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

As we get closer to the weekend, I’m sure we would all like to see this fine stretch of weather continue. There’s a few options on the table right now…from cool and dry, to warm and dry to wet and cool. I explain further in today’s video:

A Chilly Morning

Good Morning.  Right now, I’m staying up at State College with a friend because I’m going to the NWS for a conference in about a half hour.  He goes to Penn State and lives off of Atherton.  It’s a weird parking situation up here.  I was able to park in front of his place until 10 PM last night.  Then, I had to move my car to a municipal lot (about 3 blocks away) and move my car back by 8 AM this morning.  When I got up to move my car this morning, it was COLD… and there was a little frost on my windows, too!

When Does the Growing Season Start?

In a post from a couple of days ago, Jamie mentioned that he was starting to get some stuff planted… mainly cold-weather stuff. He mentioned that the average date of the last frost or freeze comes in late April and early May. I just wanted to confirm that with a graphic that I got [...]

Pens Find Win at End of the Rainbow

This picture was taken Friday night, April 11th, right before the Penguins playoff game. We were heading down to the game and it was about 6:45 PM. We were at the light ready to make the right-hand turn onto the road to get to the Marriott garage. I looked up and saw this…

My first post on gardening of the year

I have decided to write on gardening and weather, now that things are actually growing here in central PA.

Although, I must say, things are a bit behind this year by my observations. This is my sixth spring in this area (came from Pittsburgh), and I have noted that the daffodils, forsythia, etc. [...]

Ocean Winds

Here’s a little explainer on what’s going on today, and why it’s so chilly!

Temperatures in west central PA made it into the mid to upper 40s today, while western PA got close to 70! East winds coming in off the Atlantic Ocean brought a maritime layer into the state that got stuck [...]
