Today has been a slow day at WJAC as there is no noon news due to Wimbledon. The past two days were very interesting with the severe thunderstorms that rolled into the region. Remember, watches are in yellow and warnings are in orange. The SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for INDIANA COUNTY expires at 8:00 PM. WESTMORELAND expires at 8:15 and ARMSTRONG will go until 7:45 PM. Be advised that these storms have a lot [...] Warmer, But Not “Hot” It has certainly warmed up from our chilly temperatures last week, but we’re basically very close to where we should be for the time of year. Yesterday, I’m sure as many of you know, some nice thunderstorms rolled through the region and produced some very vivid lightning, strong winds, and heavy downpours. In fact, two reports went to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. In downtown Johnstown, a 70 mph wind gust was reported by the National Weather Service [...] Dewpoint, a measure of moisture available in the atmosphere in relation to the air temperature, will be talked about a bit over the next several days. The higher the dewpoint, the closer it is to producing water vapor or water droplets. So if the air temperatures falls to the dewpoint, we either have fog [...] Today I worked with Meteorologist Tony Martin as I constructed graphics for the 5, 5:30, and 6 shows, sent out the Early Warning Neighborhood Forecast, updated the website, and worked on the Thunder in the Valley graphic that was used this evening. An upper level low and trough will be in no hurry to leave southeastern Canada, blocking the warmer air from coming in full force right away. We FINALLY completed constructing the Futurecast graphics and moved onto the contour graphics. We also talked about the severe weather yesterday in which my house had about 0.1″ diameter hail. No watches or warnings are out for the area as of now, but this storm looks like it has some potential. Remember, you can view Early Warning Doppler 6 LIVE by clicking the link on the right side of the screen.

From the NWS… AT 646 PM EDT…NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A  SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING QUARTER SIZE HAIL…AND  DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED [...] Just a quick update to show that the Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Westmoreland and the counties to the west has been canceled. We are still under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch locally, however. Also, the SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for EXTREME EASTERN CENTRE COUNTY continues until 6:45 PM.
