From time to time, we get a question in our inbox from a viewer. Here’s one…
My husband and I have been wondering for some time why the temperature posted on the screen for Johnstown is different than the temperature reported by Jim/Tony/Tim. Are they from different locations? We’d be interested in [...]

A forecast bust is described as a forecast that doesn’t pan out as expected. For example, if I were to say that the temperature should be 80 and it only hits 60, that’s a big bust.
Yesterday, part of the region had temperatures in the 60s with some sunshine while others had fog and even a little freezing fog and drizzle with temperatures struggling through the 30s through the afternoon. That’s a pretty big bust. I absolutely hate when my forecast busts because that means that I was wrong. I am willing to admit when I make a mistake, however. Have a look at the details of this bust and find out how it happened by clicking into the post.

I wasn’t around the Alleghenies on Christmas Eve, instead, I was back home near Pittsburgh. We tend to have similar weather (with the exception of an occasional elevational event). I went out on Tuesday night to watch the Penguins game and was driving back home from a friends house around 1:00 AM. Most of the main roads were pretty good on my way home, but the side streets were a little dicey. I was on the highway getting ready to get off the exit going pretty close to speed limit when I started to slide. I found myself heading straight into the ‘exit’ sign just to the left of the offramp…

Just a quick note to say…
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE SEVERE WEATHER TEAM!
By Tony Martin on December 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 PM
Steady precipitation is on our doorstep, getting ready to move into far western PA from Ohio. Much of Ohio is covered in ice tonight, with the west-central part of the state seeing numerous power outages from the freezing rain. Our temperatures continue to rise VERY slowly, with most areas within a degree or two [...]

Another winter storm will impact the Alleghenies over the next 24 hours with ice and heavy rain. It looks like most areas will receive less than a 1/4″ of ice from this storm, with the exception of Northern Centre, Cameron and Clinton counties. The ice could be damaging in these areas and accumulate up [...]

Yes, I’m off (on vacation until Christmas Day), but that doesn’t mean I’m not concerned about the weather. Okay, in all honesty, I haven’t really looked at the weather much since last Monday (the last time I worked). Either way, I looked today and I just want to remind you that it’s going to [...]

Cold Coming
Another blast of arctic air will move into the region late this weekend and early next week, initiating the lake effect snows across the Laurel Highlands and Northern Alleghenies. Another storm will take aim on the area just before Christmas. Here’s more in the video:

Here’s a recap of what we saw across the Alleghenies:
Â
With 1 to 2 inches of rain falling in the Laurel Highlands on Friday, quite a bit of flooding occurred. High waters will recede tonight with temperatures dropping into the lower to mid 20s. That will set the [...]

Here’s a look at our advisories as of 11pm Thursday:
All of the counties in the “Winter Storm Warning” will pick up 4 to as much as 8 inches of snow through early Saturday morning, with the highest amounts in Elk and Cameron counties. In the “Winter Weather Advisory” area, most spots [...]

We’re in a very busy pattern all of a sudden  across the Alleghenies, with 3 different storms coming over the next 7 days. We’re going to focus on our next one though for now. It looks like low pressure will ride from Illinois to the Mason-Dixon line from Thursday night to Friday evening, [...]

Advisories run through Friday morning
Freezing rain, sleet, rain and snow continue across the area tonight with everything gradually changing over to all snow. A few inches are on the ground already in Clearfield, Jefferson and Elk counties and you’ll add another 2 to 4 tonight. In the Laurel Highlands, freezing rain and [...]

Here’s a link to a page from the National Weather Service. This page provides a wealth of information about Wind Chill. You’ll find out how it’s calculated and how quickly you can get frostbite.

You know it’s cold when your car has trouble starting when you go to leave for work. True story! Luckily I live very close to the station, so it wasn’t a huge deal. I had someone come down and give it a jump and I was able to drive it to work. Let’s hope it starts when I go to leave for lunch later.
Anyway, it’s been an extremely cold day across the Alleghenies with temperatures running mainly in the teens and lower 20s and wind chills, at times, below zero.
We didn’t break any records this morning, but we did yesterday. Take a look…

 'Tis the Season!
Two blog posts in one.
First:  Check out the snow falling from the blog. You’ll only see it until the holidays are over. It’ll be retired automatically on January 4th, 2009. I still think it’s pretty cool, though.
Second: Janel Knight and I were at the Ebensburg ‘Dickens of a Christmas’ Parade this morning. It was cold, but I was surprised to see how many people were standing out there to see the parade. That was pretty cool (literally). I’ve uploaded some pictures that I took from the event. They’re cameraphone pictures, so they aren’t the greatest. If you see yourself, leave me a comment and let me know!

Just a quick post to talk a little about the big change we felt today across the Alleghenies. It was pretty significant with highs early this morning running in the low to mid 40s. By the afternoon, we were in the 30s across the board. So, why did we see such a drastic change? [...]

Hopefully you made the most out of the day today with temperatures close to average. It’s the first time in 18 days that we’ve been even close to average. The last time we were above average was in the middle of November.
If you were decorating for the holidays, did you use LED lights? [...]
