120th Anniversary of the Flood of 1889

Today is the 120th anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters in American history.

On May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam gave way sending a 40-foot high wall of water roaring down the Conemaugh Valley. The flood crashed into the city of Johnstown in the late afternoon.

More than 22-hundred people lost [...]

Severe Weather (May 28, 2009)

It’s a busy night in the Severe Weather Center (both of them actually… more on that in a second!).

Here’s what we have going on… a storm system is moving through the Alleghenies and bringing very heavy rains to parts of the viewing area. Along with that, expect some thunderstorms, high winds, and even [...]

What a Change!

Temperatures this afternoon were some 20 to 30 degrees colder than yesterday’s highs, which were in the upper 70s and low 80s. Low pressure, rain, clouds and high pressure to our north were all responsible for the big cool-down.

Happy Memorial Day!

Nothing too fancy for the blog today as I’m pretty tired… I did just want to wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day and say thanks to those who served.

It should be a pretty uneventful day across the region with just the threat for some scattered showers and storms. The biggest threat will be [...]

Flat Stanley Joins Us On Set

My cousin, Jake, sent me ‘Flat Stanley’ in the mail a few days ago and I wanted to get him on TV. I did just that on Friday during the 6 PM show.

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, ‘Flat Stanley’ is a character of a children’s storybook. ‘Flat Stanley’ can [...]

Nice Taste of Summer on the Way

I just wanted to touch on the change in our weather over the next few days here. A large ridge of high pressure will build off to our south tonight, changing our winds to the southwest. This is going to make it feel like mid to late June into the weekend.

Frosty and Possibly Record-Setting Monday

We’ve been advertising a cool-down for a while now and it’s here.  Today’s high only made it into the 50s across the Alleghenies.  That’s not going to be the big story, though.

Our big story right now is the Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories in place across the Alleghenies tonight and into tomorrow morning.  Have a look at the map below for all the counties that are in the mix by clicking into the post.  It’s pretty much most of our viewing area.

Warm Up Alert!

We’re going to see a nice change to the pattern next week, one that will give us some true, mid-to-late spring weather. Before we get there though, we’re going to see another blast of very chilly weather. In fact, more frost is likely early next week.
