Feeling Like Fall

Think it was cool this morning? Wait until you step outside early Tuesday. And Wednesday for that matter!

A big ridge of high pressure is setting up shop in the northeast over the next several days, supplying us with plenty of cool, dry air. This will give us spectacular afternoons but some pretty cold [...]

Grasping at Summer Straws!

I have a football on my 7-day forecast denoting the start of high school football season this coming Friday and I am just not ready.  For that reason, I’m grasping at summer straws here and pulling out a weather trivia question devoted to the summer sport of baseball.

Take a look at the question then click into the post for the answer.

Earthquake in South Carolina

This isn’t unheard of, but it doesn’t happen everyday either. There was an earthquake today in South Carolina. It was a 3.2 magnitude on the Richter Scale and happened at 6:37 Saturday morning. (Talk about a rude awakening!)

For more details on the quake, click here and I’ll redirect your to the USGS [...]

Scary Looking Clouds

Scary Looking Clouds, or SLCs for short, are clouds that look scary but have a bark that’s worse than the bite. The National Weather Service in Milwaukee started something called the ‘Scary Looking Cloud Club’ and they’re encouraging people to send in their pictures of scary clouds.

Here’s a picture of one of the [...]

It Was Cool Everywhere!

Not only was it cool in the Alleghenies last month, but the state as a whole set a record for the coolest July ever! In fact, the U.S. was cooler than average with Texas and the southwest saving it from being exceptionally chilly. Take a look at where we were, courtesy of NOAA:

Wind Farm or Tornado?

I’ll be the first to admit that I like wind farms.  They help provide energy in a time when we need it and I actually think they look cool.  I get mad when people complain about them, but that’s just me.  (This does not necessarily represent the views of WJAC-TV.)

Barcode Scanner Means Instant Weather

Most phones these days come equipped with cameras.  That’s cool, but it’s novelty is over.  Now, we can use our cameras to scan bar codes!

I’ve found a semi-new technology from Microsoft that’ll allow you to scan a barcode with your phone and have your phone call a number, open a website, or even do other things.

…and Neither Are These!

What’s up with the clouds recently?  It seems like everywhere you look, there are new, weird, or odd-looking clouds.  Yesterday, I reported on the Undulus Asperatus clouds and today, there was a report on wired.com about something called Morning Glory clouds.

These Aren’t Your Parents’ Clouds!

Back in 1951, the World Meteorological Organization added a new cloud to its gallery of clouds.  It was called ‘cirrus intortus’ and that was the last one to be added to the list.

Now, it’s come time to add another one to the gallery…

It’s a Twister!

Tonight’s weather trivia question asked how many tornadoes Pennsylvania sees, on average, every year. The correct answer was 10.

I found a great website that helped me come up with that question and provided a lot of other great information about tornadoes.

Severe Weather Potential

The next 3 hours will feature a line of strong to potentially severe storms crossing the area from west to east. Wind in excess of 60 mph and large hail are possible with the storms, with the strongest weather along and west of route 219. Stay tuned to WJAC throughout the next few hours [...]

Thunderstorms

‘Tis the season, and we’ll see plenty of them over the next few days. In fact, we’re not quite done tonight. A line of thundershowers will press southeast across the area through 3 or 4 a.m. Wednesday. It’s with a cold front that will eventually stall just to our south tomorrow.

Averages Updated

I sat for about a minute trying to think of a clever title for this post, but couldn’t come up with anything clever.  This post is, however, pretty important.

I’ve updated the average highs and lows for Johnstown.  While this may not sound like much, it is because it allows us to better describe the weather.

Because the weather information used to be taken downtown and then the recording station was moved to the Johnstown-Cambria County Airport, we didn’t have the best averages.  The city is almost always warmer than the airport.  Now that the station has been at the airport for 30 years, we can get a new set of averages for Johnstown.  (A good climatological data set typically consists of at least 30 years of data!)

I took the highs and lows from the past 30 years as reported at the observation site and averaged each of them out.

How did this compare to what we had…  You’ll find out if you click into the post!

Feeling Like Summer!

Kinda nice over the past two weeks if you like warmth and some humidity. If you haven’t yet, take a look at our end of summer forecast that we issued about two weeks ago. The rest of the month should feature more of the same, so while our summer will end up cooler than average, August will make up for some of it.
