Frosty Night

As the sky clears tonight, temperatures will tumble down into the 30s. Here’s the result:

If you have a few plants that you’d like to keep around for a little longer, it would be a good idea to cover them up or bring them in tonight. After a cold start tomorrow, [...]

Beneficial Rain

Even though we didn’t like the timing, the rain this weekend was just what we needed. Amounts from Saturday morning through this afternoon ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 inches! The highest totals were in Indiana County.

The rain will be much lighter over the next few days, but the big story will be the [...]

Lightning Tracker and StrikeZone

Two of the newest tools in our arsenal are Lightning Tracker and something called StrikeZone!  Let’s start by talking about lightning tracker first.

Just like the title suggests, Lightning Tracker will track the lightning and let you know where the most recent strikes are.  The colored bolts that you’ll see on the screen indicate the age of the lightning.  The newest strikes are white and the oldest ones are red.

Take a look at the image below to see what I mean…

Different Trees Produce Different Colors

This is the second part of my fall foliage post and this time, I’m talking about the different colors you might find on (and off) of the trees.

Different colors actually come from different kinds of trees.  Have a look at the graphic below for a list of trees and the different colors they produce.

What Causes The Fall Color Change?

This is part 1 of a two-part blog post dealing with fall foliage.  In this post, we’ll focus on what causes the color change.  In the next one, we’ll see what colors you can expect to see from different types of trees.

Paternoville and Penn State Saturday

Well, it’s been a week of mild temperature (for the most part) and some hit and miss rain showers, but the students in Penn State’s Paternoville are no worse for the wear.  They’ve been camping out all week long waiting to usher the rest of the PSU fans into Beaver Stadium on Saturday.  Take a look at a few pictures sent to us from @paternovilleVP on Twitter…

Hot and Cold Water

This morning’s weather trivia question asked the following…

Flooding Rains in the Southeast

The southeast has been pummelled with terrible rains over the past week or so.  It’s been so bad that there have been multiple deaths and incredible amounts of damage.  I saw video this morning from the Today Show of a rollercoaster that was half underwater. (Update: I’m pretty sure the video is fixed.  If it isn’t, click the msnbc.com link below.  You can also get the whole story from msnbc.com by clicking here.)

If the video isn’t readily available, visit msnbc.com.

I found this graphic indicating just how much rain they’ve received.  First off, I don’t know who uses the metric system, but 300 mm is equal to almost 12 inches.  Second, take a look at the multiple bullseye over the southeast of areas with more than a foot of rain.  It’s just devastating.

Project Icarus: $150 Near-Space Launch

A group of students from MIT put together a project to launch a digital camera into near-space to take pictures and show the Earth in its true beauty.  The group is quick to state on their website that this isn’t the first time this has been done; however, it’s the first time it’s been done for this thin of a budget… only $150.

The video below is time-lapse photography of all of the pictures that were taken during the near-space flight.  The team notes on their site that the time-lapse isn’t that great because the cooler used was unstable.  It’s still a neat sight, though.

Hanging On

Even though Autumn starts tomorrow afternoon at 18 minutes after 5, we still have some warm weather to deal with. For most of us, summer ended about 2 weeks ago on Labor Day. But it’s been nice as of late, and the middle to latter part of this week looks quite warm.

We Need Rain!

I was taking a look at the regional surplus / deficits for rainfall for the year so far this morning and we REALLY need the rain. Some places are 10+ inches below average for the year.

All counties in our viewing area are below average and some are more than 25% below normal for [...]

Balancing an Egg: Does It Work?

When I got to the station a couple of years ago, I started doing my weather trivia questions on the weekends.  I asked the same question I asked tonight and was actually able to get it to work live on the air.  This year, I’m asking it again (but am not going to be able to try it).

Are you able to balance an egg on its end during the equinox?

Thinking About the Weekend?

Well here it is:

This will give us plenty of sunshine and mild afternoons. This high, however, is of Canadian origin which means the air will be relatively dry. That will allow nighttime lows to drop into the low to mid 40s for most of us, with the outlying valleys dropping [...]

Just wanted to pop a quick post to let you know about a fall Skywarn class that the National Weather Service is offering.

It’ll be held at the Indiana County Emergency Operations Center at 85 Haven Drive in Indiana.

(Old) Farmers’ Almanac

I have been looking online all night for a way to compare the two almanacs that people look at… the OLD FARMERS’ ALMANAC and the FARMERS’ ALMANAC, but I haven’t found any articles comparing the forecasting ability of the two.

Why am I doing this?  Well, it all comes from tonight’s weather trivia question.  I asked “What is the Farmers Almanac predicting for the upcoming winter in the Alleghenies?” (answer was ‘close to average’) and Marty asked me which almanac I was referring to.  I told him the ‘Farmers’ Almanac’ but he said that doesn’t count.  People consider the ‘Old Farmers’ Almanac’ to be the authority because it’s been around longer.

Football Forecast: PSU vs. Syracuse

Another Saturday and another home game in Happy Valley. This week’s won’t be as nice, weather-wise, as last week’s, however. This week will bring cooler temperatures and just a slight chance of some rain.

Have a look at the football forecast for kickoff for tomorrow’s game:

Rainy Friday?

Well, at least for some of us. The models have been having an extremely tough time handling our coastal system for the past few days, but now there seems to be some consensus tonight.
