You know how they say you get smarter by reading things? Well, I definitely learned something today on the weather blog of our sister station, WTOV-9 in Steubenville. I learned that Moscow, Russia is going to stop the major snows for the year.

Well, here’s the definition:
Indian summer is an informal expression given to a period of sunny, warm weather in autumn in the northern hemisphere, typically in late October or early November, after the leaves have turned due to an onset of frost but before the first snowfall.
Some of us saw snow last week, others did not. So if we really bend the “rule” here, this could qualify! Either way, it sure is nice. And there’s more to come.

NOAA has posted it’s winter outlook and the results are… well… ummm… sorta inconclusive.
The good news is that they’re not predicting a wet winter for us. The bad news is that they’re not necessarily predicting a dry winter, either.

As some of the new model runs arrive tonight, indications are that we’ll be dealing with some wet snow across the southern half of the state all the way into Sunday morning. The area most likely to pick up a few inches of the slush will be across Cambria and Somerset counties east to I-99. And just like the first round, this will also be elevation-dependent.

So, I’ve been over how a computer model predicts the weather, right?
Essentially, it takes the current weather and puts it into a giant mathematical formula and spits out the weather for a future period. Then it puts that weather back into the formula and repeats…
