Snow Storm Update

Everything is pretty much still on track tonight, as low pressure continues to move in an unorthodox way into New England.

This storm has already produced wind gusts up to 40 mph, and we will see them go even higher. Winds will gust up to 55 mph tonight and early Friday as the storm continues to move westward, before subsiding a bit later in the day. Obviously with the winds this strong, blowing and drifting snow will be a problem.

The snow is its own problem too. We’ve seen a coating to 2 inches as of 9pm in the Laurel Highlands, and also in parts of Cameron and Clinton counties. The snow will continue to intensify and spread southward overnight, falling heavily at times through mid-afternoon Friday. Snow amounts are still on track as well, with the accumulation map in a previous post.

Amounts will be greatest in the Laurel Highlands, where in some cases up to a foot and a half will pile up through Sunday morning. That’s right, SUNDAY morning. This is going to be a very long-duration event for the areas west of I-99. While it may snow at times east of the Allegheny Front, the accumulating snow will persist until mid-day Sunday in the Laurel Highlands and to a lesser extent in the Northern Alleghenies.

Stay safe and warm. And if you can wait until the weekend to travel, that’s probably a good idea. The winds tonight and tomorrow will cause near-blizzard conditions at times.
